Pallet Types

Wood Pallet

Weight: ~40 lbs

Standard hardwood pallet. Most common type found on used IBCs. Heat-treated (HT stamp) for international shipping compliance. Heaviest option but most repairable.

+ Cheap, repairable, widely available

- Can rot if exposed to moisture, heaviest option

Plastic Pallet

Weight: ~25 lbs

Molded HDPE or PP pallet. More common on newer IBCs and food-grade applications. Completely washable, won't absorb liquids or harbor bacteria.

+ Washable, lightweight, rot-proof, food-safe

- More expensive, not repairable if cracked

Composite Pallet

Weight: ~30 lbs

Metal frame with plastic deck boards. Combines steel strength with plastic convenience. Premium option found on high-end IBCs.

+ Very durable, long-lasting, washable

- Highest cost, heavier than pure plastic

Space Planning & Weight Considerations

Floor Loading

A full 275-gallon IBC weighs approximately 2,425 lbs distributed over a 48" x 40" footprint (13.3 sq ft). That's about 182 lbs per square foot. Most commercial concrete floors are rated for 250+ psf. Residential garage floors are typically rated for 50 psf — so a full IBC should only be placed on a reinforced concrete surface.

Door Clearance

A 275-gallon IBC at 46" height will fit through any standard 80" doorway. Width at 40" requires a minimum 42" doorway. Standard commercial doors at 36" wide will NOT accommodate an IBC on its pallet. You'll need a roll-up or double door, or to move the IBC by tilting (empty only).

Stacking

Empty IBCs can be safely stacked 2-high when the cage and bottle are in good condition. Never stack full IBCs unless using a purpose-built racking system rated for the weight. A full 275-gallon IBC weighs over 1 ton — ensure your racking is rated accordingly.

Truck Loading

Standard 48' trailers fit IBCs 12 across x 2 deep x 2 high (empty) = 48 units per load. 53' trailers can fit 56 units. Full IBCs are single-layer only due to weight. See our transportation page for detailed loading configurations.
